El Salvador’s Chivo Bitcoin wallet code leaked by hackers

The information regarding a breach in the Bitcoin Chivo Wallet ATMs in El Salvador was released on BreachForums, a platform frequented by criminals and malicious hackers. According to reports, CiberInteligenciaSV had mentioned the forthcoming BreachForums post on its Telegram Channel. The cybercriminal organization apparently made invitations to government officials for negotiations. In El Salvador, citizens can use Chivo to buy or sell Bitcoin, as well as withdraw cryptocurrency from BTC ATMs.

However, issues with the wallet, such as slow execution, app crashes, and other bugs, were reported soon after its launch. The situation escalated further when the personal information of approximately five million Salvadorans was exposed online. It was reported that the hackers gained access to these files from a cloud backup. Initially, the source of this exposed information was mistakenly seen as a vaccination database, as it contained personal details like full names, dates of birth, individual profile photos, and addresses.

Amidst these developments, there has been no official comment or statement from the Bukele administration regarding the incident.
